Why EFT?
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an evidence-based tool known as ‘’tapping ‘’.
It involves gentle systematic tapping on particular parts of the face and body, sometimes described as psychological acupuncture, as the tapping points are located at the same points which are used in the traditional acupuncture.
EFT allows us to release the intensity and transform the way uncomfortable feelings like hurt, guilt, fear, or anger may be affecting our experience. EFT can also be used to help transform the thoughts and beliefs behind our emotional experiences.
After just a few rounds of tapping, people often report feeling lighter and calmer and able to breathe more easily – almost as if they have more space inside now. They also report that their thinking has changed, they have gained new insights or that they are feeling better, overall.
EFT is an easy to learn tool available to anyone regardless of qualifications, age or background. Once you learn EFT you can self-administer at any point.
The tapping on the designated points on the face and body is combined with verbalizing (stating out loud) the identified problem followed by a general affirmation phrase.
This combination of acknowledging the problem and allowing the possibility of self - acceptance anyway seems to allow the system to relax and respond to future tapping.
You can download the PDF attached with specific tapping points for reference.
What EFT is NOT
EFT does not claim to offer a cure for cancer but it is a powerful support for positive well being, building your confidence so you can play an active role in your healing.
EFT is NOT hypnosis, cognitive-behavioural therapy, NLP, prayer, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, or any other technique that has similar properties or compatible supporting theories.
EFT is NOT a replacement for adequate mental health counselling or physiological tests and treatment by authorised and licensed Medical Healthcare Provider
What using EFT CAN do is to help you to reduce stress immediately. It may also allow you to soothe past memories that could have contributed to the intensity of your current stress response.
As we begin to notice, acknowledge, and transform how we carry our emotions, we begin to see just how this may be contributing to pain, illness, or other personal challenges. By using EFT, we can reconnect with our innate sense of unshakeable wellbeing.
When used correctly, EFT has the ability to help you feel calm. When you feel calm in your mind and your body, you will be able to think clearer, make better decisions, feel stronger physically, better cope with side effects and impact of treatment or cancer diagnosis itself.
How does EFT work?
So how exactly does EFT work on our minds and in our brains?
It’s a surprisingly simple technique. By stimulating pressure points on the body with this two finger tapping technique, Emotional Freedom Techniques result in a calming effect on two important parts of the brain. The first one is called the amygdala (the stress centre of the brain). This part plays a role in the stress response. When the amygdala sends a distress signal, another part of the brain activates the ‘fight or flight’ response, which may provoke feelings like anger, anxiety or worry and physical symptoms like changes in our breathing and heart rate.
The other part of the brain that EFT tapping has an impact on is the hippocampus (the brain's memory centre). This part of the brain is responsible for storing memories and can remind us of similar events from the past, which may be linked to us feeling anxious and fearful.
EFT also seems to have a calming effect on cortisol – the stress hormone. When we are under stress, the prefrontal cortex of the brain, our rational thinking brain goes “offline,” and our body’s levels of adrenaline and cortisol increase. The EFT intervention can help calm the amygdala, facilitate the release of calming chemicals, and bring us back to a more resourceful state.
We also know from the clinical trials that EFT has the ability to turn off or deregulate up to six genes in our bodies that are involved in stress symptoms.
There is more than 20 years of research and over 170 published research studies showing that EFT has amazing responses across a range of different conditions, decreasing phobias, anxiety and relieving symptoms of PTSD, chronic pain and many more. We also have many cases showing the EFT is particularly helpful and it can work alongside both traditional medical approaches to cancer care and other complementary therapies.
The research is widely accessible and I would recommend exploring it if you are interested.
